This Best Biscuit and Gravy Casserole combines flaky refrigerated biscuits, savory breakfast sausage, creamy eggs, and rich homemade gravy baked together into a comforting breakfast dish perfect for family mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Biscuits

  • 1 package refrigerated biscuits (8 biscuits)

Sausage

  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage

Gravy

  • 1 packet gravy mix

Egg Mixture

  • 5 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Cook Sausage: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). In the meantime, cook 1 pound of ground breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until it is fully cooked through and no longer pink. Stir occasionally to break up the sausage into smaller pieces.
  2. Prepare Egg Mixture and Gravy: In a medium bowl, whisk together 5 eggs and 1/2 cup of milk until well combined. Separately, prepare 1 packet of gravy mix according to the package directions, usually by mixing the powder with water and bringing it to a boil until thickened.
  3. Prepare the Biscuits: Open the package of refrigerated biscuits and cut each biscuit into fourths to create smaller pieces for layering. Spray the bottom and sides of a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray to ensure easy removal later.
  4. Assemble the Casserole: Place the cut biscuit pieces evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the cooked sausage over the biscuits. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage and biscuits. Finally, pour the prepared gravy on top, covering all layers beneath.
  5. Bake and Serve: Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the eggs are set. Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before cutting. Serve warm and enjoy your hearty breakfast casserole!

Notes

  • You can use homemade gravy instead of packet gravy mix for a fresher taste.
  • Try adding shredded cheese on top before baking for extra flavor.
  • Substitute turkey sausage for a leaner option.
  • Make sure to let the casserole rest after baking so it holds together when sliced.
  • This casserole can be prepared the night before and baked in the morning.
