Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat is ideal)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • ½ tsp onion powder (optional)

For Assembling

  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar or American cheese (optional)
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Tomato slices
  • Onion slices (raw or grilled)
  • Pickles
  • Condiments of choice (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently shape each portion into patties about ¾ inch thick without overworking the meat to retain juiciness. Press a small thumb-sized indent in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking. Season both sides evenly with salt, black pepper, and optional garlic and onion powders.
  2. Cook the Burgers: Choose your cooking method:
Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Grill patties for 3–4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Add cheese slices during the last minute and close the lid to melt the cheese.
Pan-fry: Heat a heavy skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side. Add cheese slices in the last minute and cover the pan to melt.
  3. Toast the Buns: Lightly butter hamburger buns if desired. Toast them on the grill or in the pan until golden brown and slightly crisp.
  4. Assemble the Burger: Spread your chosen sauce on the bottom bun. Layer lettuce leaves, then place the patty with melted cheese on top. Add tomato slices, onion slices, and pickles, followed by more sauce if desired. Complete with the top bun.

Notes

  • Do not overwork the ground beef when shaping patties to keep burgers tender and juicy.
  • The thumb indent helps prevent patties from puffing up in the center while cooking.
  • Cooking times are based on medium doneness; adjust times for rare or well-done burgers.
  • Optional cheese enhances flavor but can be omitted for a dairy-free option.
  • Toast buns to add texture and prevent sogginess.
  • Customize with your favorite condiments and toppings for a personalized burger experience.
