4.6 from 56 reviews

Coquito is a traditional Puerto Rican coconut-based creamy cocktail, perfect for festive occasions. This rich and smooth drink combines coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, and a splash of white rum, creating a deliciously spiced and boozy treat that is best served chilled.

Ingredients

Scale

Liquids

  • 1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk (full-fat preferred)
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 cup white rum

Spices & Flavorings

  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 34 whole cloves (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Pour the coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, and evaporated milk into a blender or large mixing bowl, mixing thoroughly to ensure all creamy components are well combined.
  2. Add Spices and Rum: Stir in the cinnamon (stick or ground), nutmeg, vanilla extract, cloves if using, and white rum. Blend or stir gently but thoroughly to evenly distribute the spices and alcohol throughout the mixture.
  3. Chill Thoroughly: Transfer the mixture into a clean glass bottle or airtight container and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the drink to chill properly.
  4. Shake Before Serving: Since ingredients tend to settle, give the Coquito a good shake or stir before pouring it into glasses to revive the creamy texture and aroma of spices.

Notes

  • Use full-fat coconut milk for the creamiest texture and richest flavor.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and add a little coconut extract if desired.
  • Shake well before serving as ingredients tend to separate during refrigeration.
  • This drink can be stored refrigerated for up to one week.
  • Add more or less rum to adjust the strength to personal preference.
