Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 300g 5% fat beef mince
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 250g cooked rice

Sauce Ingredients

  • 20ml dark soy sauce
  • 15ml sriracha
  • 10g tomato puree
  • 20g honey
  • Splash of water (about 15ml)

Optional Toppings

  • Sliced spring onion
  • Sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prep the vegetables: Chop the onion, bell pepper, and garlic into small, even pieces to ensure they cook evenly.
  2. Sauté the vegetables: Heat a pan over medium heat and add the chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes until they start to soften. Then add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant and aromatic.
  3. Cook the beef: Add the beef mince to the pan with the vegetables. Stir and cook continuously until all the liquid evaporates and the beef is browned and cooked through, breaking up any lumps as it cooks.
  4. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, combine the dark soy sauce, sriracha, tomato puree, honey, and a splash of water. Stir the mixture well until all ingredients are incorporated and the sauce is smooth.
  5. Add the sauce: Pour the prepared sauce into the pan with the beef and vegetables. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce thickens and evenly coats the mixture.
  6. Combine with rice: Add the cooked rice into the pan. Stir thoroughly to combine the rice with the spicy beef mixture, making sure the rice is heated through and well coated with the sauce.
  7. Serve: Transfer to serving plates and garnish with sliced spring onions and sesame seeds if desired for a fresh and crunchy finish.

Notes

  • Ensure to use cooked rice that is slightly cooled or leftover rice for best texture; freshly cooked rice may become mushy.
  • Adjust the amount of sriracha based on your heat preference.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute dark soy sauce with tamari sauce.
  • To make this recipe vegetarian, replace beef mince with textured vegetable protein or mushrooms.
  • Make sure to brown the beef well for added flavor and crispiness.
