This Easy Apple Crumble Recipe features tender, cinnamon-spiced apples topped with a buttery oat crumble. It’s a deliciously comforting dessert perfect for cozy nights, served warm and ideal with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Filling:

  • 4 apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

For the Crumble:

  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup quick cook oats
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, combine the peeled and diced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, cinnamon, and all-purpose flour. Toss well to coat all apple pieces evenly. Then, pour this apple mixture into a 2-quart baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  2. Make the crumble topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the light brown sugar, all-purpose flour, quick cook oats, and cinnamon. Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter. Using your hands, rub and combine the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture forms coarse crumbs. This may take a few minutes for the butter to be fully incorporated.
  3. Assemble and bake: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish. Lightly press down on the topping to help it adhere. Place the baking dish in a preheated oven set to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the topping is golden, bubbly, and caramelized around the edges.
  4. Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly. Serve the apple crumble warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the sweet and spiced flavors.

Notes

  • You can substitute apples with other firm fruits like pears or a mix of berries for variety.
  • Using cold butter helps create a crispier crumble topping.
  • If you prefer a less sweet dessert, reduce the sugar amounts slightly.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated before serving.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and oats.
