Base
- 8 precooked frozen hash brown patties (thawing is not necessary)
Cheese and Meat
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
- 1 & 1/2 cups diced leftover ham (about 3/4 pound)
- 2 scallions, diced
Custard
- 9 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon dry ground mustard (optional but recommended)
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Preheat and prepare dish: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Arrange hash browns: Place the 8 frozen hash brown patties in a single layer evenly across the bottom of the baking dish. Do not thaw beforehand.
- Add cheeses, ham, and scallions: Sprinkle the shredded sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, diced leftover ham, and diced scallions evenly over the hash brown patties.
- Make egg custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the 9 large eggs, 1 cup whole milk, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon dry ground mustard (optional), and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder until well combined.
- Pour custard over layers: Evenly pour the egg mixture over the cheese, ham, and hash brown layers in the baking dish.
- Bake covered: Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes to allow the custard to set.
- Bake uncovered: Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 20 minutes or until the edges turn golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool and serve: Let the casserole cool for 5-10 minutes before cutting into portions and serving warm.
Notes
- Frozen hash brown patties can be used directly without thawing, simplifying preparation.
- Substitute leftover ham with cooked bacon or sausage as desired.
- Dry ground mustard adds a subtle tangy flavor but can be omitted if unavailable.
- Allowing the casserole to rest improves slicing and serving ease.
- Refrigerate leftovers within two hours and consume within 3-4 days.
