  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon instant yeast
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup warm water, between 105°F-115°F
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup shortening, melted
  • Vegetable or peanut oil, for frying

For the Cinnamon Sugar:

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon

For the Glaze:

  • 4 ⅔ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 ½ tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Warm water, as needed

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Set aside. In a separate bowl, combine warm water, honey, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix in melted shortening. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and knead for 8 minutes with a stand mixer. Let rise for 1-2 hours.
  2. Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Mixture: Whisk together cinnamon and sugar. Set aside.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: Roll the risen dough into a rectangle, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, and roll up tightly.
  4. Bake the Rolls: Cut the rolled dough into slices, place on a baking sheet, and bake until golden brown.
  5. Make the Glaze: Mix powdered sugar, honey, melted butter, vanilla extract, salt, and water to make a glaze. Drizzle over warm cinnamon rolls and serve.

Notes

  • You can prepare the dough the night before and let it rise in the refrigerator overnight for a quicker morning bake.
  • For a gooier cinnamon roll, add chopped nuts or raisins to the filling.
