Ingredients

Scale

Cake:

  • 1 box (425g) yellow cake mix
  • 1½ cups (360ml) water
  • ⅓ cup (80ml) vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs

Apple Mixture:

  • 6 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 3 tbsp (45g) brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) lemon juice

Topping:

  • ¾ cup (95g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (100g) brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (115g) cold butter, cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Cake Batter: In a large bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Stir well until the batter is smooth and fully combined. Then pour this batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  3. Prepare Apple Topping: In another bowl, toss the peeled and sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice until all slices are well-coated. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the cake batter layer in the pan.
  4. Make Crumb Topping: Combine the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and salt in a small bowl. Cut the cold, cubed butter into this mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture has a crumbly texture. Sprinkle this crumbly topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake the Cake: Place the pan in the oven and bake for 35 to 60 minutes, checking after 35 minutes. The cake is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool completely in the pan. For an elegant finishing touch, dust the top lightly with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure butter for the topping is very cold to achieve a crumbly texture.
  • Apple varieties such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well for a balanced tart-sweet flavor.
  • The baking time may vary depending on your oven, so check for doneness starting at 35 minutes.
  • Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the topping mixture.
