Base
- 9 cups rice Chex cereal, divided into 3 bowls (3 cups each)
Strawberry Coating
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup freeze-dried strawberries
- 1 tbsp strawberry gelatin powder (like Jell-O)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Chocolate Coating
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Vanilla Coating
- 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- Crush the Strawberries: Add 1/2 cup freeze-dried strawberries to a food processor and pulse until they turn into a fine powder, which will enhance their flavor and texture in the coating.
- Make the Strawberry Coating: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1/2 cup white chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon butter. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted. Stir in the strawberry gelatin powder and the crushed strawberry powder until the mixture is smooth.
- Coat Strawberry Chex: Pour the melted strawberry mixture evenly over 3 cups of rice Chex cereal in a mixing bowl. Gently stir to coat all the cereal pieces with the strawberry mixture.
- Powder Strawberry Layer: Transfer the coated strawberry Chex to a zip-top plastic bag containing 1/2 cup powdered sugar. Seal the bag tightly and shake vigorously until all cereal pieces are fully coated with powdered sugar.
- Make the Chocolate Coating: Melt 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon butter together in a microwave-safe bowl using 20-second bursts, stirring until smooth and melted.
- Coat Chocolate Chex: Pour this chocolate mixture over another 3 cups of rice Chex cereal. Stir gently to ensure even coating over all pieces.
- Powder Chocolate Layer: Place the coated chocolate cereal into a zip-top bag with 1/2 cup powdered sugar. Seal and shake well to evenly coat all pieces.
- Make the Vanilla Coating: Melt 1/2 cup white chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon butter in a microwave-safe bowl. After melting, stir in 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth.
- Coat Vanilla Chex: Pour the vanilla mixture over the remaining 3 cups of rice Chex cereal. Stir gently to coat all cereal pieces completely.
- Powder Vanilla Layer: Add the coated vanilla Chex to a zip-top bag containing 1/2 cup powdered sugar. Shake until all pieces are thoroughly coated.
- Combine and Serve: Once all three layers have been coated and are cool, combine the strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla coated cereals in a large bowl. Gently toss together to blend the layers evenly. Serve immediately in a round bowl for a colorful, flavorful snack.
Notes
- If you don’t have a food processor, place freeze-dried strawberries in a sturdy plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin or mallet.
- Be sure to shake the powdered sugar-coated cereal gently but thoroughly to avoid crushing the coated cereal pieces.
- You can store leftover Neapolitan Puppy Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- For a stronger strawberry flavor, increase the amount of freeze-dried strawberries up to 3/4 cup.
- This snack mix is perfect for parties, gift bags, or a fun family treat.
