FOR THE BATTER:

  • 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1⁄2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

FOR THE TOPPING:

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1⁄2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish and put in the oven. Once butter has melted, remove and set aside.
  2. Stir together the 1 1/2 cups sugar, 4 tablespoons cocoa powder, flour, milk, baking powder, salt, and vanilla extract. Spoon into the baking dish over melted butter, but do not stir.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the 2 cups sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle over the batter in the pan. Pour boiling water over the topping, but do not stir.
  4. Bake until the top has set, 35-40 minutes. The bottom will be loose and a bit gooey.
  5. Let cool for 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
