Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry Squares:

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed

Vanilla Custard:

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pastry: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unfold and roll out the puff pastry. Cut into squares.
  2. Bake the Pastry Squares: Transfer squares to the baking sheet, prick with a fork, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Make the Vanilla Custard: Heat milk, sugar, and cornstarch in a saucepan. Temper egg yolks, combine, and cook until thickened. Stir in vanilla, cool, and refrigerate.
  4. Whip the Cream: Whip heavy cream in a chilled bowl until stiff peaks form.
  5. Assemble the Squares: Spread custard on a pastry square, add whipped cream, top with another square, and repeat.
  6. Finishing Touches (Optional): Dust with powdered sugar or add toppings like melted chocolate, berries, or nuts.

Notes

  • For best results, ensure the custard is completely chilled before assembling the squares.
  • Experiment with different toppings to customize the flavor of your custard squares.
